Mercedes-Benz Prepares S-Class Facelift: A Giant Grille and Interior Overhaul Coming for 2026
The automotive landscape is constantly shifting. While SUVs have taken over the market, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class remains the benchmark for luxury sedans. With the current generation celebrating its fourth anniversary, the German automaker is working on a refresh designed to keep the flagship sedan at the top of its game.
Spy photographers have spotted heavily disguised prototypes undergoing road testing, offering a glimpse of the significant changes coming for the 2026 model year.
The most noticeable update is a massive new grille. It has been supersized and is far taller than the current design, signaling a bold new direction for Mercedes’ signature styling. This redesign necessitates a new front bumper, which features a much smaller central intake to accommodate the imposing grille. While it’s difficult to discern every detail beneath the camouflage, the prototypes appear to be equipped with temporary headlights, suggesting the production model will feature new lighting units.
The rear end of the updated S-Class also appears to be under development. While photographers didn’t get a clear view, previous reports suggest a new bumper and updated taillights are likely. The S-Class may also incorporate some changes to the reflectors and exhaust system to keep the design fresh and modern.
Inside, the S-Class is expected to undergo a significant overhaul. Previous rumors suggested a completely redesigned dashboard featuring the Hyperscreen display, along with a front passenger screen—a trend gaining traction in the luxury segment. While nothing is official, these updates promise to bring the S-Class’s interior technology up to date.
The 2026 S-Class will likely continue to offer a range of powertrain options, including the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing 442 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, and the 496 hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. Customers can also expect the 621 hp twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12, along with a plug-in hybrid option offering an electric-only range of up to 46 miles.
