The flagship sedan era may be winding down, but Mercedes-Benz continues to innovate with an updated S-Class that’s set to arrive this fall. Celebrating its fourth anniversary this year, the iconic model is undergoing a redesign to keep up with market demands and evolving luxury trends.
Caught undergoing testing in the distance, the prototypes are heavily camouflaged to hide the significant design changes. In particular, the grille has been supersized and is much taller than before, signaling a bold new direction for the S-Class.
Additional changes are hard to discern under the disguises, but the prototypes feature temporary headlights, suggesting the final production model will sport new lighting units. At the rear, the prototypes offer a glimpse of updated taillights and a new bumper.
While interior details remain under wraps, previous reports suggest major cabin updates are in store. The model is rumored to adopt an all-new dashboard featuring a cutting-edge Hyperscreen display and a front passenger screen, aligning with the latest luxury automotive trends.
Under the hood, the current S-Class offers a range of powertrains, including a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing 442 hp (330 kW / 448 PS) and 413 lb-ft (559 Nm) of torque, a 496 hp (370 kW / 503 PS) twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, a 621 hp (463 kW / 630 PS) twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with an electric-only range of 46 miles (74 km).
