The S-Class Refresh: A Subtle Reinvention of a German Icon
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has long been the benchmark for luxury sedans, and as the model approaches its fifth anniversary in the 2027 model year, Mercedes-Benz is preparing a significant refresh. The automotive world is eagerly anticipating what this update will bring, as the current generation has been in production since the 2021 model year.
Caught undergoing testing, the prototypes are heavily camouflaged, but hints of major changes are already apparent. The most striking alteration is the grille, which has been considerably enlarged, giving the S-Class a more imposing presence. This redesign necessitates a new front bumper, featuring a notably smaller central air intake compared to the current model.
Further details are scarce, but the prototypes appear to be equipped with temporary headlights, suggesting the production model will feature new lighting units. The rear-end prototypes are even more obscured, but it is likely that the refresh will also include a redesigned bumper and updated taillights. Other updates could include revisions to the reflectors and exhaust system.
While spy photographers were unable to capture interior shots, previous reports suggest substantial changes are planned for the cabin. While nothing is official, the model is rumored to adopt an all-new dashboard with a Hyperscreen display. Additionally, the car is expected to offer a front passenger screen, following the trend set by other luxury manufacturers.
The 2027 S-Class will likely continue to offer an assortment of powertrains, including a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing around 442 horsepower (330 kW/448 PS) and 413 lb-ft (559 Nm) of torque. Customers can also expect to choose from a 496 horsepower (370 kW/503 PS) twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, a 621 horsepower (463 kW/630 PS) twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with an electric-only range of approximately 46 miles (74 km).
While Mercedes-Benz has not released official details about the 2027 S-Class, this refresh is a crucial move to maintain the model’s competitive edge in a rapidly evolving luxury market. As automotive technology continues to advance, Mercedes-Benz is committed to delivering the pinnacle of luxury, performance, and innovation in the S-Class.
